About bonaire
Bonaire means "good air" and is situated just north of Venezuela. Together with Aruba and Curaçao, Bonaire forms a group referred to as the ABC islands and is part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Of the 3 ABC islands, Bonaire is mostly visited for its diver's paradise. With less tourism than the other 2 islands, it is a place to relax, enjoy the sun, sea and water sports like diving, snorkeling, wind- and kite surfing and water skiing.
Like most other caribbean islands in the area Bonaire often changed owner. Therefor it has a rich history. Names like 'Kralendijk', Bonaires capital, is derived from Koralendijk (Dutch for coral dike). The locals call this city 'Playa' (Spanish for beach). Along the westside of the island a long coral reef attracts many stunning fish. The second biggest city on Bonaire is called Rincón and is the oldest city on the island. It is situated on the higher grounds of the North-East of the island.
For nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts the special car tracks in the Washington/Slagbaai national parc are a great way to watch iguanas, birds and flamingo. The large Pekelmeer (salty lake) attracts the flamingo as well. Cars can be rented on the island.
